California Senior Leaders

The Collective Collaboration

The VideoVoice Collective is currently collaborating with the California Senior Leaders Program to put digital cameras in the hands of outstanding senior community leaders. Together, we are working to communicate the life stories, ongoing achievements, and future hopes of California seniors.

The California Senior Leaders Program and Healthy Aging Project is based at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Public Health and funded by The California Wellness Foundation. It is designed to identify, recognize, and provide additional training and co-learning opportunities to diverse and often low income older volunteers. These leaders' contributions to healthy aging, community building and social justice frequently fall outside the mainstream of traditionally recognized volunteer efforts. The Program honors seniors that have demonstrated sustained and outstanding volunteer contributions in:

  • Influencing policy,
  • Defending basic human needs and mental health,
  • Supporting cultural programs and cross-cultural understanding,
  • Dedication to healthy aging,
  • Working with youth and families, and
  • Activist organizing for social justice.

Through this work, Senior Leaders significantly improve the lives of other seniors and their communities. Awardees range in age from 61 to 92, and have in common a commitment to healthy aging, a demonstrated dedication to social justice, and a determination to strengthen their communities.

The Participatory Film

The VideoVoice Collective took part in a two-day award, recognition and training event in Oakland, California in February 2007. We shared stories, jokes, a few tears, and cameras, in the hopes of coming together to document this momentous gathering of leaders.

We are now in the process of transcribing, logging, and editing a preliminary version of a 20-minute film. During the next stage of the VideoVoice Method, we will share this rough cut of the film with participants and continue its development through the feedback of those that know their own stories best, the California Senior Leaders.
